My kids and I recently finished reading The Shakespeare Stealer by Gary Blackwood. At first my kids weren’t really into the Elizabetha.

4 ways to hook your readers and keep them wanting more: sympathetic protagonist, conflict, every scene has multiple reasons for inclusion in story, end of chapter sligthly unresolved

Definitely something to consider when writing. Especially during your first draft, avoid "filler" chapters unless they absolutely add substance to the story (builds characters, plot, etc.) then it's probably unnecessary.

Get your readers caring right away Layer on the conflict Make every scene count End each chapter with a hook.

I finally did something right In my book, the mysterious guy is polite and helpful, the Mary Sue is kind of evil, the popular girl seems to be mean but actually wants to be friends and the sidekick is . I won't say dumb but also not smart

Characters you need to stop writing. I hate the phrase Mary Sue but I am still terrified of writing one. Don't forget Gary Stu's either.

Try writing these characters but in a way that they're completely fresh. Maybe write in their perspective. (Especially the "nerdy sidekick", make him the main character.

I think 'need to stop writing' should be placed with 'avoid cliches' because you should write what you want, no matter how cliché it is. That being said, this is great for me who is ALWAYS avoiding cliché characters!
