REMEMBER: these are names from different cultures and languages. They will sound completely illogical and out-of-place if you use them in the wrong setting.

Try writing these characters but in a way that they're completely fresh. Maybe write in their perspective. (Especially the "nerdy sidekick", make him the main character.
I think 'need to stop writing' should be placed with 'avoid cliches' because you should write what you want, no matter how cliché it is. That being said, this is great for me who is ALWAYS avoiding cliché characters!
