Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a medical condition primarily seen in premature infants, where portions of the bowel undergo necrosis (tissue death). It occurs post-natally (i.e., is not seen in stillborn infants) and is the second most common cause of morbidity in premature infants. Insert NGT, keep NPO, observe for 24-48 hrs. ABT and IV fluids. TPN. Careful hand washing, avoid tight diapers, handle infant carefully.
