Here is a May Apple, otherwise known as Mandrake! I have some given to me by my Michigan neighbor, Alice. She has many wildflowers and we are wildflower rustlers in the spring. I saw plenty of these growing by the wayside in Pennsylvania but have not seen them here in the Hudson Valley...other than as a regifted plant!

The incredible Pink Lady Slipper, the elusive North American Orchid (the only type native to this continent, I believe and it comes in pink and yellow). I have found it two times in my lifetime. One bed in my hometown of Old Tappan, NJ. A secret place I only told a few about. I never picked them there, as they were protected. But, recently a few years ago when visiting my parents I found a flower and transplanted it with success to my Mom's backyard where it blooms still. Do the new owners…

When Trillium arrive, Jack in the Pulpit can't be far behind! And when he appears, well, lilacs and Morel mushrooms are just around the corner! Yummy! Did you know that the lilac flower is edible and some make fritters with it?

"Bloodroot was used by eastern American Indian tribes as a red dye and in the treatment of ulcers, skin conditions, and as a blood purifier as well as for treating ulcers and skin conditions. The juice treated coughs and sore throats; the taste masked by placing the juice on a lump of maple sugar that was then sucked. Higher oral doses were observed to expel phlegm and cause vomiting. The root entered 19th century medicine as a caustic topical treatment for skin cancers, polyps, and warts."

Here's the dainty fellow known as Dutchman's breeches...he reminds me of a native bleeding heart...otherwise known as Dicentra...a springtime favorite (Dicentra, that is and the Dutchman, too!). I have some in my wildflower garden tucked in at the foot of a sixty foot high Norwegian Spruce...

Like the Trillium and other spring flowers and herbs, the Jack in the Pulpit requires an open sunny canopy above to force up from under the leaf mold of the dense forest floor.

Forest with spring canopy open allowing for the blossoming of trilliums...later, as summer arrives and leaves flourish, the canopy overhead will be too thick with branches and leaves blocking sun to the forest floor and thus the trillium will die off.

Anyone can rent a kayak, canoe or rowboat at Baker Camp in Harriman State Park — you don’t have to be an overnight guest.  Lake Sebago is extremely clean, with beautiful views of the area and the water. You can also splash out and rent a cabin for an overnight stay, and this entitles you …

Blue muscari (grape hyacinth) isn't really wild but does escape there...I found some lovely ones growing down near the river and they've joined my other friend in the little wildflower areas of my garden
