Some of my favorite things to play with (because they’re cheap and easy!) 1. Minwax Express Color is a quick way to add stain, it’s blendable, and easy to clean up. 2. ArtMinds laser cut frames are so cute! I bought mine at the NYC Michaels. 3. I’m not too sure about the eco benefits of using natural brushes versus nylon, but this little guy was 45 cents. 4. Ramie twine can be found in the floral section of your craft store. It’s a great way to add a rustic look to a project. Before staining, I recommend that you sand the countertop, preferably with an orbital or mouse type sander that won't damage the wood. I started with 120 grit and finished with 200 grit. The countertop is Pronomen Beech, stained with a mix of Olympic Dark Walnut (80%) and a Minwax Mahogany (20%). We used a small measuring cup to measure the two oil-based stains into a canning jar after testing multiple colors individually and not liking what we saw. I personally prefer applying thinner coats Ikea Fans, Oil Based Stains, Measuring Cup, Kitchen Sinks, Canning Jars, Dark Walnut, Grit, Thinner

Oddly enough this may be useful at some point - Whether it’s an antler mount hanging outside on the barn or a shed found in the woods, antlers that have been bleached by the elements can be restored to a natural color with Minwax Golden Oak stain. Rub it on with a cotton cloth and let dry. One coat usually does the trick, but you can repeat until you’ve achieved the desired coloration. I built a simple frame with 1 x 2's and then attached lattice strips to the front of it with a nail gun.  Then I stained it with Minwax Special Walnut and printed a few stencils off the computer.  I just used plain white for the words and then, to give "Drive-In Theatre" some pizazz, I took a pencil and dipped the eraser end in black paint and added dots in the words to resemble lights. After this is how it was done: Remove all hardware sand lighty. Use Annie Sloan Chalk paint. After it has totally dried sand again in all the area that I you want distressed. If finished and the peice needs depth take a q-tip some stain and go back over some of the places that I have sanded.. Then seal it with waxes from Annie Sloan as well. Also use minwax and added my own stain or color to it. Furniture Update

Minwax express color. I just used this on a table top for the first time and I am so stoked. It was so simple, no odor, and the color is awesome. It matches the rest of the table perfectly and I am so relieved because I did not want to sand and re-finish anything, but the top. So excited about this stuff!!! I have refinished furniture for YEARS. This is THE BEST stripper! After stripping all the old finish off, sand your piece, wipe down with denatured alcohol, stain with your favorite shade of MINWAX penetrating oil stain, and put on about three coats of MINWAX Poly. GLOSS poly is the most durable, so if you want a less glossy finish, first use GLOSS to get the durability, then do your next two coats in a SATIN finish.
