Japanese Farmers

A staged 19th century photograph of a farmer and his wife. The man wears the traditional straw rain coat ( 蓑, mino) and kasa (笠), a hat made of bamboo or sedge. Unidentified photographer. Note that there is a small number close to the left foot of the farmer. It is blotted out, but still visible. Maybe an early pirated view? Although this is only a small sized albumen print, the coloring is very precise. (Photographer probably Kusakabe Kimbei)
