Lampropelma sp.- Danum Valley, Malaysia One difference I noticed with the Bornean lowland dipterocarp forest and other tropical forests I have visited was the lack of tarantulas. During the months I was there I saw a total of 3 despite extensive night hiking, in contrast on Barro Colorado Island in Panama where I could (and did) see 3 in a half hour! I even saw more high up in the Andes mountains in Ecuador. Maybe it was the wrong time of year or maybe there are less terrestrial species…

Iridopelma seladonium, female. Tiny and gorgeous Brazilian tarantula. ETA: Since 2012, the official scientific name for this species is Typhochlaena seladonia. It's so hard keeping up with the changing nomenclature! This little arboreal trap-door tarantula is endemic to Brazil, which is contesting the legality of any specimens in the hobby... so here in the USA, they cannot legally be transported across state lines. *sad face*
