Craft Beer

A selection of the craft beers that I have had the enjoyment of drinking.

Epic - Armageddon IPA. Thankfully in NZ the craft beer scene is starting to hit the supermarket shelves. Picked this up at a local New World and as the name suggests, has more hops then your average hoppy beer.

Epic - Flying Nun 30 Year Ale (Pale Ale). Flying Nun Records is a local NZ music label that has been part of the music scene for the past, well, 30yrs. Epic decided to make a beer in honour of that and this is what we get. A lovely little pale ale to sip away during a warm summer night while listening to Chris Knox - "Love Not Given Lightly".

Three Boys - Wheat. Sorry, couldn't find an image with the bottle as well. But, this is my favourite of any beer I've had. They add lemon zest and coriander to the process giving a nice fruity nose and slightly tangy flavour. A must try for you wheat beer fans, or just beer fans in general.

Epic - Barrel Aged IPA. Ok, so, I haven't had this in a while but I was more fond of the Armageddon IPA compared to this when I had it. Still, this is still a very fine beer which many people would prefer to drink over the regular IPA.

8 Wired - The Big Smoke (Smoked Porter). To be honest, it will take me a while to get into smoked beers. This was the first (and currently only) smoked beer I've had. The nose was great, don't get me wrong, but there was something about the smokiness that put me off slightly. Will definitely need to try it again, if just to get used to the flavour.

8 Wired - iStout (Imperial Stout). What you are looking at in the glass is part vanilla ice cream and part iStout, which is otherwise known as an imperial float (I think, haven't tried doing that yet but worth a go sometime). This beer was my first foray into imperial stouts (or stouts in general). Nice and rich, sweet, lovely silky feel in the mouth. Google the history on how imperial stouts came about, very interesting reading (ps. it has to do with Russians!).

Renaissance - Perfection (Pale Ale). Bit of a theme going on here already. Very tasty beer from the Renaissance Brewery located in Blenheim. Hoppy, slight malts there too, very crisp and refreshing.

Three Boys - Pils A pilsner styled beer but made with NZ hops so a bit fruity. Good drop but not as bitter as I would like from a pilsner.

Renaissance - Stonecutter (Scotch Ale). Who knew that the Scottish did ales as well as whiskies?! Anyways, this is a fine fine fine scotch ale. The first time I had it I thought it was average, but then had another a few weeks ago which I had left age for a few months and WOW! A great beer to have on a slightly cool afternoon (or morning if you are so inclined).

8 Wired - Hopwired IPA Probably the first craft beer that I had which was given to me by my brother. Absolutely fantastic. Changed the way I thought about beer. Really the beginning of my craft beer journey.
