Werner Schröer (12 February 1918 in Mülheim an der Ruhr – 10 February 1985 in Ottobrunn) was a German World War II fighter ace who served in the Luftwaffe from 1937 until the end of the war. A recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, Schröer was the second most successful claimant of air victories after Hans-Joachim Marseille in the Mediterranean. Konrad Bauer claimed his first of 18 victories over the Eastern Front on 20 March 1943. In 1944 he was transferred to the Western Front where he would claim another 39 victories. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 31 October 1944 after his 34th victory. After the war he joined the new Luftwaffe and retired as a Hauptmann in 1960. He scored 48 of his victories against the Western Allies and three victories over the Eastern Front in over 450 combat missions whilst flying the Messerschmitt Bf 109. The edelweiss flower was the symbol of Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS Gebirgsjäger.
