Permaculture Plants: Cherry, Tart or Sour
SOUR CHERRY: Canopy, sub-canopy or shrub. Grows bushy to 4m. The sour cherry tree is smaller, about 4m tall, and bushier. However, most cherry trees in orchards are kept pruned to much smaller sizes. Needs a cold climate and well-drained soil. The best time to plant them is in winter, when they are bare-rooted. Like all fruit trees they like a feed in spring and autumn. Sour cherries - 'Morello' is the most popular variety - are self-fertile, and so you need only one tree. Uncommon in Aus.
My Edible Fruit Trees: Pomegranate Trees SA
POMEGRANATE: Shrub. Multi-stemmed to around 4m tall. In late spring to summer single scarlet/orange flowers with crepe-like petals appear. The fruit develops from late summer to early winter. The bright, glossy green leaves turn yellow in autumn. 'Nana'is a dwarf form growing to 1m (3') or less. Very hardy and can be grown anywhere in Australia. Frost and drought tolerant. Prefer full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Prune lightly in late winter to maintain bushiness.
