A roomy kitchen topped the Pfendlers’ wish list. Sandra designed it herself, favoring an old-fashioned look that relies on distressed custom maple cabinets, a furniture-style island made to look like a free-standing antique cupboard and reclaimed heart-pine floorboards.

Thoughtful touches like a large pantry, under-cabinet lighting (great for grabbing a midnight snack) paneled appliances and wine racks make the kitchen a chef’s paradise. There is even a small built-in table meant for future grandchildren. “When you’re taking on a project like this, you think futuristically about how you’re going to share it,” Alyssa says.

Talk about a kitchen with all the right ingredients! This character-filled setting boasts custom cabinetry built from recycled hemlock. An antique canoe was repurposed to cast task lighting over the center island that features a live-edge wood counter. Guests love to saddle up for good food and even better conversation on the playful horse-saddle stools.

A decidedly European vibe percolates in the kitchen of this salvaged-log-and-timber hybrid home. French chestnut cabinets reside next to a narrow Irish bluestone-capped island. Golden travertine perimeter counters and hammered-copper sinks add a warm glow to the room.

Variety is the spice of life — and a successful kitchen. Pairing contrasting shades of stain and paint, such as the tar-tinted Shaker-style cabinetry, which boasts streaks of dark green, alongside the crisp white cooktop island creates a fresh and polished space in this traditional log home.

The owners of this log home spent weeks developing the perfect shade of cabinetry stain so that it wouldn’t appear too blue or too yellow and would allow the wood grain to shine through. The result is a perfect complement to the red oak floors and the granite counters, which are “leathered” rather than being buffed to a high gloss. (Bonus: Leathered granite hides fingerprints, water marks and crumbs!)

Painting existing cabinets gave the kitchen a whole new look, although the actual changes were modest. Jan was happy to swap their old stove for a new Aga cooker like one she used and loved in their home in England. A new lighting fixture was a more subtle change. The floor plan limited space in the kitchen, so the homeowners installed a 48-inch gas range rather than a separate cooktop and built-in oven to conserve space for cabinets with black granite countertops. The builder added the soffit over the sink to allow for recessed lighting without covering the log ceiling beams.
