Estas estruturas foram ordenadas a serem construídas pelo ex-presidente iugoslavo Josip Broz Tito entre 1960 e 70 para comemorar os locais onde ocorreram as batalhas da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Na década de 80, estes monumentos atraíram  milhões de visitantes por ano. Depois de 1990, com a queda da URSS, foram abandonados completamente e seus significados simbólicos foram perdidos para sempre.
