Scarab Club, 217 Farnsworth Street, Detroit, MI, Michigan Historic Site:  Founded in 1907 is one of Michigna’s oldest arts organizations.  Originally called the Hopkin Club after Detroit marine painter Robert Hopkin, it was renamed in 1913.  The scarab an Egyptian symbol of rebirth, represents the club’s commitment to the perpetual renewal of the arts in Detroit. The exterior mosaic tiles, which appeared in 1928 renderings, were not completed until the 1980s, when they were finished by W.P.A. muralist and member Edgar Yaeger, who was a junior member of the club in 1928. Aretha Franklin was born March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tenn. — but she was raised mostly in Detroit. Her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, was a famous preacher, and her childhood was steeped in both music and the burgeoning civil rights movement.  Franklin made her first album for JVB when she was just 14 years old. Aretha Franklin, the "Queen of Soul," died Thursday (8/16/2018) in her home city of Detroit after battling pancreatic cancer.  Pictured 2011 in Detroit at a event with President Obama. Horse Drinking Fountain, City of Detroit, MI.  Circa 1889, Total of fifty in use in 1900.  For nearly 200 years the only means of transportation on the streets of Detroit was a horse. In 1837 Detroit had four livery stables for horses. In 1860 the Detroit Waterworks survey of the city listed 17 stables. By 1894 it had risen to 82 stables and about 12,000 horses on the streets. Alexander Macomb (April 3, 1782, Detroit, MI – June 25, 1841, Washington D. C.) was the Commanding General of the US Army from May 29, 1828 until his death on June 25, 1841. Macomb was the field commander at the Battle of Plattsburgh during the War of 1812 and, after the stunning victory, was lauded with praise and styled "The Hero of Plattsburgh" by some of the American press. Cadillac Place, located at 3044 West Grand Boulevard in the New Center area of Detroit, MI. It was renamed for the French founder of Detroit, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. The building was originally named for William Durant, but an internal power struggle led to his ouster in 1921 and the structure was renamed the General Motors Building. Three sides of the second-story gable ends of the play house are decorated in high-relief stucco with characters from well-known nursery rhymes, such as Old King Cole, The Cow that Jumper Over the Moon and Little Miss Muffet.
