Squid species 'Promachoteuthis sulcus' seems to possess teeth, which are actually "lips" that protect the animal's beak (jaws). Only a small specimen of this species was found in the South Atlantic, at a depth of around 6,600 ft, and there are not much information about this animal. Photo: Richard E. Young

Near the surface, tunicates (just like sponges), filter water and retain nutrients they need in the process of this respiration. This predatory tunicate (Megalodicopia hians) has developed a unique strategy: it is both a filter filterer and a predator. Its large mouth closes rapidly on small shrimps or other crustaceans that stray there. They are found at depths of 200–1,000 meters and grow up to 20cm.

Sea Squirts - Deep sea, predatory tunicates are more closely related to vertebrates like us than to most other invertebrates.
