Pilgrim 2 In the 1880's, two medical centres were built near Smithtown on Long Island, NY, to accept mentally ill in-patients primarily from New York City; Kings Park and Pilgrim Psychiatric Centres. Initially referred to as lunatic asylums they became the largest such facilities in the world. These hospitals were eventually phased out in favour of other treatments and closed in the mid 1990's.
