This Day in St. Louis History: April 4, 1998 A mid-river collision A runaway barge broke free on the Mississippi River, and began freely floating downstream. It slammed into the side of the Admiral, sending a shock wave through the President Casino. Amooring on the Admiral snapped, and it swung out into the river with 2,000 casino patrons trapped on board. Fifty people were injured but all were safely evacuated, and the Admiral was moved to Laclede’s Landing.
