Tepe Gawra, kurdish for "the great mound”, is situated in Northeastern Iraq, 24 km north-east of the Tigris River at Mosul. The site offers an almost continuous sequence of occupation from the 5th to the 2nd millennium BC. Data from architectural and small-find analyses suggest that the fortified building was probably built for administrative purposes.

Uruk/Warka, in modern-day Iraq, is one of the first cities, and was populated almost without interruption for over 5,000 years - from the 4th millennium BC to the 1st millennium AD. Uruk is famous for the invention of cuneiform writing at the end of the 4th millennium, the so-called “late Uruk period”, during which many distinctive architectural features were invented and developed. By that time, the city already covered an area of 2.5 square kilometres. The “Uruk Visualisation Project.”
