Going through this, it occurs to me that banking is like breweries when it comes to their products. Like microbreweries, small banks develop products (websites) that are very personal, quirky, and interesting while the big breweries/banks develop sites that are exceptionally bland. Banks are certainly facing the innovator's dilemma right now - particularly in the credit card space where interchange rates are rapidly approaching zero due to the influx of upstart new companies. Rogers and CIBC are the first to announce that they will be launching a digital wallet application. I was surprised to read in this article that only 5% of Canadians have engaged in some kind of smartphone-based mobile banking. Given that number and the fact that the app will initially only be available on three models of Blackberry, I assume they’re not expecting a huge takeup when they finally launch...

American - so a lot of the information is limited in value. But I'm sure the top two findings apply to Canadian Millennials: Millennials are open to switching financial institutions if provided better rewards, access to branches, and well designed digital applications | What Motivates Millennials to Switch Banks

An interesting concept, for sure, but it will be interesting to see what kind of reception this gets. Interesting stats on mobile banking adoption rates in the US. Not surprisingly, one of the key barriers banks will need to address to drive adoption is security: 48% of mobile phone owners listed this as their key reason not to use mobile banking. #mobile #banking

Apple's new Passbook application is all set to shake up mobile banking and payments. The coolest thing about Passbook? It will AUTOMATICALLY open your virtual payment card (e.g., your Starbucks card) when you walk into a store. This means a huge opportunity for banks and card issuers to partner directly with retailers to become the preferred "Passbook card" for their store. Also a new way for mobile offers/coupons to be presented to customers when they enter a store. It'll be interesting to…

It makes sense to me that financial services businesses could do well on Pinterest. They're in the business of selling abstract ideas that, in a lot of cases, can more simply and effectively be communicated through images that provide a better emotional hook than words alone.

It's interesting that despite the focus on Personal Financial Management tools by the banks, only 4% of bank customers use their bank's PFM tool and only 27% use any PFM tool at all (like Mint). So what are these tools missing that will lead to greater adoption within the banks' customer base? #banking #PFM
