Freedom Crossing Monument is located on the bank of the Niagara River in Lewiston, New York, and honors the courage of fugitive slaves who sought a new life of freedom in Canada, and to the local volunteers who helped them on their journey across the Niagara River. The statue based on a fictional book, Freedom Crossing, is breathtaking, because a character from the book, Laura, is disguised in men’s clothing and pointing to Canada, while a real life hero is helping a family onto a boat.
