MIT professor Harold "Doc" Edgerton is considered the father of high-speed photography. His 1964 image of a .30-caliber bullet ripping through an apple is widely viewed as a work of art. More importantly, it was also a feat of electrical engineering in the pioneering flash technology that helped him take the shot. The bigger challenge wasn't producing a flash but activating the shutter. Human reactions were too slow to do it manually, so Edgerton used the sound of the bullet itself as a trigger. "In the face of ceaseless conflicts, it can sometimes seem as if audiences have become inured to reports or images of suffering. But in my experience, some photographs will always have the power to make us confront horror. The best photographs of war might make us want to look away. It’s imperative that we do not." ~ David Hume Kennerly, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography Airborne Forces, Eastern Region, Prisoners Of War, Wipe Out, Fresno, Destruction, Human Rights

“Lunch atop a Skyscraper", September 1932 ~ One of the most iconic images in the world was staged. The workers on the beam were posed for multiple takes intended as advertising for what was then called the RCA building. Some historians believe there was a sturdy level of the structure just below the frame. The photo was published in the New York Herald Tribune that October. The identities of the workers are almost entirely unknown. The photographer is also a mystery. #photography Famous Photos, Iconic Photos, Photos Du, Manhattan New York, Alfred Stieglitz, Vintage Photo Prints, Vintage Photos, Lunch On A Skyscraper, Bernie Memes

The Girl in the Kent State Photo - In 1970, student photographer John Filo took an image of dead protester Jeffrey Miller that immediately became iconic, arguably one of the most important images of the 20th century. But what happened to the 14-year-old kneeling next to him? Photography has the power to change lives, to change the way we see ourselves & the world around us. A very high price was paid by both the photographer & this girl; it continues to be paid. Ohio, Nixon, La Pieta, Kent State University, Rotc, National Symbols, Biscayne, Rare Photos

To Make Their Own Way in the World: The Enduring Legacy of the Zealy Daguerreotypes ~ "Is there a correct way to regard these images? Should one view them, or any coerced image, at all? To whom do they belong? Do they quicken or numb the conscience? Does displaying them traumatize the living? Is it care or cowardice to keep them concealed? What do we owe the dead?" In his new book "Road Not Taken", photographer Arnaud Montagard captures an America emptied of its inhabitants. Daily Fresh Eggs ~ ‘This was taken in a remote and sparsely populated city in Oregon. While I was shooting this old car, which was used to deliver eggs to the inhabitants of the town, an old guy stopped and invited me to his home.
