John Martin Pandemonium, 1825, oil on canvas, Louvre, Paris. John Martin was an English romantic painter, engraver and illustrator. He was one of the most popular painters of his day, specialised in vast canvases of the ancient world in chaos. The Seventh Plague of Egypt, The Fall of Babylon, The Destruction of Pompeii are just some of his famous scenes of panic. In this case Pandæmonium is the capital of Hell in the epic poem Paradise Lost by the 17th century English poet John Milton.
